Weekly update (3/22)

As expected, this past week was filled with many component sourcing tasks. We encountered an issue with the availability of one of the power regulators but we were able to quickly find a substitute for it. Otherwise our supply chain seems to be on time for the pre-production and production runs. By this time next week we will have estimated delivery dates for all of our components so we will have a much clearer picture of our production dates.
We have also sent out pre-production Gerbers for DFM and are working closely with our contract manufacturer as we transition to their mass production suppliers.
As for an update on the pre-production boards, we have mentioned upgrading the Si5330 clock distribution chip to an Si5338 (on all of the boards) for clock generation purposes. The Si5338 is a low-jitter clock source which will allow the bladeRF’s performance to improve greatly. Among the previously mentioned improvements, we’ve also added a removable cap RF shield to all of the boards.
Lastly, we have changed the expansion port header to a high pitch 60 pin SMT samtec header, which allows for an entire bank of FPGA IO pins to be brought out to the main expansion port.We have also added an additional 0.1″ pitch 6 pin mini expansion port that is meant to be more convenient for developing addons.
Next week should be interesting and we will keep you posted!

Weekly update (3/16)

As we said last week, this week was going to be spent sourcing components. As of the moment, all of the high risk components are in our possession or in transit, so things are looking good! Once our purchase orders clear and the distributors tell us when they will ship things out we will have a better idea of when exactly the pre-production units will ship. As such most of next week will be devoted to component sourcing as well.

In the meantime, we will release driver updates and user mode updates. We will send out another update when that happens.

Weekly update (3/8)

We have spent the past week tracking packages, sourcing components with longer lead times, and preparing purchase orders. There don’t appear to be any supply chain issues that would affect any of the runs. We hope to have a clear idea for when the pre-production run will happen as soon as our funds are released and our purchase orders are placed. Additionally, some of our bulk accessory purchases have started coming in, so we will begin sending out the beta units shortly.

Lastly, we have gone ahead and incorporated some of your feedback into our design. There was some concern over the quality of the clock feeding the LMS’s data converters so we uprgaded the Si5330 to an Si5338 so that we could have a use it as an ultra low jitter PLL. The upgrade should greatly improve the system’s SNR. We have also added additional GPIO and an SMA port for synchronization.

Next week will be similar to this week as we will be spending most our time acquiring components.
